Grand Re-opening for Salt Plains Crystal Digging Area

After being closed for two years for cleanup the crystal digging area at Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge was re-opened on April 25, 2009. However a grand re-opening ceremony is planned for Saturday, May 30th.
Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge will have a grand re-opening ceremony for the crystal digging area at 10 a.m. May 30.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be followed by short presentations by Lt. Gov. Jari Askins, state Sen. David Myers and Army Corps of Engineers Col. Anthony Funkhouser.

A crystal contest will be 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. hosted by Great Salt Plains Association. Prizes will be given for six categories: smallest, largest and best blade and largest and best cluster. Door prizes will be announced periodically throughout the day.

The crystal digging area was closed two years ago after a Boy Scout found some material left over from World War II training.
