Oklahoma City — Surrounded by fans of internationally celebrated rock band The Flaming Lips, Gov. Brad Henry today signed an executive order proclaiming the group’s song, “Do You Realize??,” the official rock song of Oklahoma. The action took place at the Oklahoma History Center in Oklahoma City.
The recognition comes after an online vote held late last year. In that statewide contest, the Flaming Lips’ song, from the 2002 compact disc “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots,” drew 51 percent of more than 21,000 votes cast.
Voters had been able to choose among 10 songs selected by a panel of experts. The vote was part of an effort promoting Another Hot Oklahoma Night, a new exhibit promoting the state’s rock ‘n’ roll heritage. The exhibit opens May 2 at the Oklahoma History Center.
Gov Henry resolved to sign the executive order after legislation to codify the vote failed by three votes in the state House.
“Oklahomans spoke loud and clear in that vote, and I thought it was important to make sure their choice was heard,” said the Governor.
“Not only are the Flaming Lips among the most original bands in rock music, they are great ambassadors for Oklahoma. They are fiercely loyal and proud Oklahomans, and their fellow Oklahomans are evidently just as loyal and proud about this Oklahoma born-and-bred group.”
Gov. Henry added that the song, “Do You Realize??” reflects the inherent optimism and love of humanity that characterize the Oklahoma spirit.
To help commemorate the event, Gov. Henry issued a proclamation declaring April 28, 2009, as “Flaming Lips Day” in the State of Oklahoma.
Formed in 1983, the Lips have earned international stardom and critical acclaim for their innovative, eclectic and often provocative rock music. The band, which is also renowned for its surreal but high-energy live performances, has won three Grammys.
Band members are Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins, Stephen Drozd and Kliph Scurlock.
