Wyatt Cemetery - Kiowa County
On my return trip for Elk City last week I decided I would try for the 3rd time to find the Wyatt Cemetery, this time, thanks to a comment in the forum, I knew where to look.
So I went to Gotebo, Ok, it was nearly 9 PM, I head south out of Gotebo on OK highway 54 for 4 miles to Ozark Trail, turned west went to first road that went south, no not on this road, turned around went to the 2nd road, nope not on this road either, I told myself I would go one more mile and if I didn't find the cemetery and it was getting to dark that I would give up. So I head down the 3rd road and the head lights caught the headstones, but I had to go nearly a half a mile down the road before I could turn around. By that time the sun was down, so I turn the car so the headlights would shine on the cemetery, there it was grass up to my waist and only the top of 4 stones were showing. Needless to say I wasn't going to wade around int the dark in all that grass, so I took one picture and said well I'll just have to make another trip later.
This picture isn't very good but it was the only I took.
I was a little disappointed because of the tall grass, the late hour, and no gate with the name Wyatt cemetery. I didn't even find a road that went into the cemetery. I was hoping to find the gate so I could take a picture, and maybe find a historical marker telling me about the cemetery.
Wyatt Cemetery
Hill School was located south and west of Gotebo on the Edward Hill land. It was a one room school from 1907 to 1939. The community dwindled away when the school was closed. Cemetery donated by Buren Wyatt from a corner of his homestead was located near the school
