Visiting Rock Mary
Rock Mary

Donna and I visited the historic landmark of Rock Mary on Saturday afternoon (1/6/07). Or at least to as close as we could get to it. It's located just west of Hinton, Oklahoma. There are trail markers leading from Red Rock Canyon all the way to Rock Mary. Unfortunately this trail leads you to private land with no trespassing signs posted everywhere.

Mr. Dutton of Troop 186 contacted the Oklahoma Historical Society and requested permission to use county land to place signs that would permanently mark the trail to Rock Mary from Red Rock Canyon, a twenty mile hike. Subsequently, permission was granted and Troop 186 invited Troop 919 to assist in the marking effort. The Scoutmaster of Troop 919 proposed the idea to the boys in the Troop and the boys unanimously voted to go on a joint campout with Troop 186 and join in this worthwhile effort. This was considered an unique undertaking since many Troops have gone to Red Rock Canyon and could not find the Rock Mary outcropping. It was agreed upon between Mr. Dutton (scoutmaster of Troop 186) and Gaines B. Jackson (scoutmaster of Troop 919) that each Troop would be responsible for his own application for Historical Trails patches for the boys in their respective troops that participated.Read rest of this article.
